Observe ARCTIC WildlifeWe love to go out wildlife spotting, but nature is not a ZOO. So, we need to put some effort in it and we have to be bit lucky. On our trips we might see moose, giant sea-eagles, puffins, hare, foxes, seals and otter. It is great fun to go out in the early morning and stroll through wild areas and observe wildlife.
the fun of outdoor cookingWe love to cook outside on a bonfire and we are quite good in it. So, we like to teach you what we now and bake for instance bread on a hot plate or prepare some fish on a grill. We also like to work with traditional Norwegian ingredients like dried fish or meat. In July and August there are fresh berries to be found. In September we go hunting edible mushrooms.
A great variety of outdoor micro adventures...
You can choose out of 10+ outdoor adventures during your stay with us. Remember that we also depend on weather and wind conditions for some activities. Some outdoor activities consume quite some time, so we probably cannot do all of them on one trip. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Here are some answers on frequently asked questions about these family adventures. Feel free to contact us if you have other questions.
Is there a day to day itinerary?
No, but there is a rough plan that we make when you book the trip. The actual weather and wind conditions are important factors for our daily plans. So when you arrive we make a kind of schedule based on the forecasts, but this might change. It is the Arctic and even in the warm summer time, weather can change quickly. So, you have to have a flexible and open mindset. Weather is the boss and we make short-term plans to get the most out of it and have a great time.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS IF I LIKE TO ADD MORE FAMILY MEMBERS?
The costs of this trip is based on 2 adults and 1, 2 or 3 children (of any age). If you like to add more family members like children, friends, grandparents or even another family, contact us and we can give you a quote.
HOW TOUGH ARE THE ACTIVITIES?
Depending on the age of the children and the fitness level of the parents we can easily scale the activities to a level that suits you. We like to show you the Norwegian scenery and connect you to nature, that is more important than hiking up the highest mountain.
MY HUSBAND WANT TO DO TOUGH THINGS AND I LIKE TO RELAX
We are used to situations where one of the parents wants to take it easy and the other wants to do more tough and adventurous things. And it is not always the father that wants to do the tough things... So, just discuss these kind of things with us and we make a plan.
WE want to stay in tents and cabins and no apartment
That is possible and depending on your wishes there might be a discount in the costs.
HOW LONG BEFORE THE START I HAVE TO BOOK
If you book early (more than a few months ahead) we have more choices in accommodation and starting dates. And flights will be cheaper... But we are used to improvise and we are good in that. So do not worry about that too much.
CAn senior TRAVELLERS also join these trips
Yes, we have those requests and we like it that different generations travel together. We like to organise in a way that everybody has a good time.
CAN THE DURATION OF THE TRIP BE LONGER OR SHORTER
Yes! Longer is seldom a problem. Do not make your stay stay too short. It takes some time to get acclimatised and get rid of all kinds of stress.
DISCOVER THE AMAZING NATURE OF STEIGEN
The municipality of Steigen (1000 km2) is located 150 km north of the polar circle and just 50 km north of the airport of Bodø. Nature is amazing here and from a distance the coastline of the Lofoten islands is visible. Steigen offers unspoilt wild nature and you won't meet many tourists. The coastline is full of islands and jagged mountains with great views over the sea. More inland we find lakes, valleys and waterfalls. In the north there are two national parks: Rago and Sjunkhatten. Check all the details below.
nature of steigen
So, here is some information about the area that we explore during this expedition. Steigen is 1000 km2 big and has a variety of landscapes and terrain.
The coastline is characterized by dramatic jagged mountains that reach sea level. The coastline has many sandy beaches and very typical are the birch and pine forests that almost meet the sea. There are many islands and islets close to the shore, but also further away. The water is crystal clear and is full of life. It is a great playground for kayaking or (if you dare) some Arctic snorkeling with a drysuit. Some of the archipelagos are nature reserves or bird sanctuaries. There is also a lot of history and remains of older times. There are interesting fjords to explore and just a hike up a hill and get a view over the wide Vestfjord with the Lofoten islands in the background is a treat for your eyes and camera.
The mountains of Steigen
The mountains are steep, but there are trails that also can be done in wintertime (we take crampons or snowshoes with us). The views are magnificent and there are cozy cabins in the mountains and also in the lower areas that we can use for staying overnight. Most of the mountain lakes freeze in the winter time and offer possibilities for ice fishing.
The valleys and forests
The valleys in Steigen offer great opportunities for hikes on sea level, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. If the temperatures are above zero the valleys can be quite wet and swampy with many small streams to cross. So hiking is quite adventurous out here. There are a lot of waterfalls and some of them will be frozen in the winter. Encounters with foxes, moose and reindeer are quite common. Pine and birch forests are inviting for a hike and we like to stay overnight in tents or (heated) tipi in wild surroundings.
Glaciers, nature reserves, and national parks
In the south of Steigen, we find the Helldalsisen glacier and this area is part of the Sjunkhatten national park. There are no roads here and the area can only be visited by boat.
Steigen has quite some interesting things to see of the iron age, the times of the Vikings and more recently fortifications from WWII.
midnight sun and northern lights
From the end of May the period of the midnight sun will start, and that means the sun is always above the horizon north of the Arctic Circle until the beginning of August.
The northern lights maybe visible on some days from mid August to the end of August. Chances are better in September, because the evnings and nights are longer.
facts about the WEATHER AND CLIMATE here
The temperature in this period varies between 1o and 20 degrees Celsius (and sometimes more). The warm Gulfstream provides a mild climate during the Arctic summer.
Weather changes quickly in the Arctic, so we have to be prepared for all kinds of weather. Because our plans are depending on weather conditions, we make daily plans for our activities.
Water temperatures are rising from around 9 to 12 degrees Celsius during the Arctic summer. In shallow areas (near beaches) temperatures can be higher.
wildlife in the area
There are not many people living in this area (2500 in 1000 km2) and there is a lot of wild nature. So, this makes it a perfect place for encounters with wildlife. Remember it is not a ZOO and we have to be lucky, silent and determined.
There is a huge amount of the giant sea-eagles living in Steigen and they can be spotted in the mountains and also near the coastline. We will certainly spot these amazing birds.
Moose and (wild) reindeer can be spotted in the forest, valleys and sometimes close to the beaches. While driving we have to be careful, because they can cross the roads.
Well, there is more to see for example foxes, hare, lynx, grouse, and seabirds.
Near the coast and on the islands we might see seals, otter and sometimes small whales or dolphins. When we are out on the sea with our small expedition vessel we even might see killer whales, but we have to be very lucky for that. that.
