LOCATION AND ARRIVAL INFORMATION
LOCATION
This trip starts at our base, a small fishing village named Helnessund, in the municipality of Steigen (Nordland) in the north of Norway. It's located 50 km north of Bodø and can be reached by ferry daily. This fast ferry (hurtigbåt in Norwegian) takes you in approximately one hour from Helnessund to Bodø. Check the timetable for departures in the FAQ.

AIRPORT
To fly to Bodø you usually take a connecting flight from Oslo. There are multiple flights daily between Oslo and Bodø with different airlines such as SAS, NORWEGIAN, WIDEROE or WIZZ Air.

TRAVELING BY TRAIN IN NORWAY
If you want to travel economically friendly we can recommend you a 17 hours train ride from Oslo to Bodø. Check vy.no for more information about traveling by train.

OUR ADVISE: TAKE YOUR TIME
We would like to recommend you to arrive one day before the start of this trip and take some time to acclimatize yourself. It's also good to reduce the travel and work stress.
We can give you suggestions for (budget) hostels or hotels in Bodø if you like. An overnight stay in Bodø after the trip has ended is also a good idea. In case of bad weather ferries can be cancelled or delayed.
LEVEL AND EXPERIENCE
LEVEL
For this trip you need to be in a good shape and you will face some challenges. Not extreme but it can be out of your comfort zone at times. In general the distances are not too long (3-5 hours), but sometimes the trails are steep or include parts where there is no path (cross-country). Weather and terrain (especially snow in June and September) can make short distances more tough. If you have problems with your knees, then this trip is not the one for you.

EXPERIENCE
You need some basic experience to join this trip. Your previous experience should include hiking, sleeping in tents, fire making and outdoor cooking.

Everybody has a comfort zone and it always differs from the comfort zone of other people. It is a personal thing. Being in wild nature away from civilization is adventurous, but can also cause stress or might scare you a bit occasionally. These feelings are natural and not a problem. Just be open and share things or ask questions. They say life starts at the end of your comfort zone. We believe that this is very true.
ACCOMMODATION
ACCOMMODATION
You will stay overnight in (mountain) cabins, expedition tents and a tipi tent (with wood stove). Two nights in (mountain) cabins are included.

THE ARCTIC
Remember we are in the Arctic and here the weather rules. There is no day-to-day itinerary, only short term plans are realistic. We make our decisions on what is possible and when to do it based on weather forecast and conditions. Of course we love to hear your ideas and wishes. And we do our best to make it happen. THE ROUGH SKETCH OF THE BRENNVIK MASSIF EXPEDITION

The walls of the mountains of the Brennvik massif rise out of the sea at the East coast of the wide Vestfjord. Here we find remote beaches, forests close to the sea and a vast population of sea eagles. The Brennvik massif is part of the municipality of Steigen (1000 km2), which is located in the north of Norway just above the Arctic Circle. The mountains are steep but not extreme high (1100 meters max), and very impressive. After you arrive in Helnessund, we camp close to our base and make plans for the coming days. We will visit different areas around the Brennvik massif. Sometimes we use a boat or car to get to a starting point. There are several multi-day hikes planned. If possible, we also try to hike some stretches with smaller backpacks. Several routes lead to stunning mountain lakes, and we plan to stay overnight in tents close to these lakes. We also will do some kayaking in the fjords, and we teach you the basics if this is a new thing for you. At the end of the expedition, we take you back to our base, and you take the ferry back to Bodø.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES DURING THE BRENNVIK EXPEDITION

During this expedition we will explore several routes on different sides of the massif. Some trails go up, others follow the coastline or lead us to wild valleys. On other occasions we will use kayaks or boats to get to places that otherwise could not be reached. We make plans daily based on weather forecasts and your interests and ideas.

MULTI-DAY HIKES

Picture
During this expedition you will explore areas with unique scenery. One day we are up in the mountains with lakes and maybe we can observe reindeer. The other day you are wandering in  valleys, crossing rivers and enjoying waterfalls coming down. This expedition includes multi-day hikes with backpacks.

wilderness tenting

Picture
We will set up tent camps on great spots, often far from civilization. We will not meet many other hikers. We will cook outside a lot and and drinkable water is everywhere. In the evenings we usually have a bonfire and you help us with collecting and chopping wood.

food from nature

Picture
One of our favorite activities is trying to find food in nature. Maybe we do some deep-sea fishing with our kayaks or hunt some berries (July/August) or edible mushrooms (August/September).

REACH SOME SUMMITS

Picture
When we are in the mountains we will surely do some attempts to reach one or more summits. There is no alpine climbing involved, but on some trails we might use a rope for safety reasons. If you want to skip a summit, no problem just enjoy some hours around the cabin or basecamp.

learn outdoor skills

Picture
If mountain hiking or tenting in the wilderness is new for you then you can learn a lot and we are happy to teach you all kind of outdoor skills. Navigation, understanding maps, outdoor cooking, making a fire or a shelter are examples.

KAYAKING THE FJORDS

Picture
We will use our kayaks to explore islands of the archipelago close to the Brennvik massif. From the islands we have unique views of the jagged mountains. For sure we will get good chances to observe giant sea eagles, maybe some Atlantic puffins and other birds. The water is crystal clear with sandy bottoms and the sea often turns turquoise.

visit mountain cabins

Picture
A few days we will stay overnight in a cozy cabin high in the mountains or somewhere deep in a valley. Great to relax, share some stories, taste the local aquavit and enjoy the feeling of slow travel.
