A ROUGH SKETCH OF THE TRip
We pick you up by car at 10:00 AM in Bodo. Before we leave, you will get a briefing in which we tell you more about the plan for the coming days. We will start with a 2-hour drive to the Rago National Park. Rago is pure wilderness and is famous for its wild rivers, lakes and waterfalls. We make here a lunch stop and do a short hike in the park. After that, we will continue our journey to Steigen. The road is very scenic, and you get great views over the mountains, lakes and fjords. We make several shortstops and do some detours over small scenic roads. Once arrived in the late afternoon in Steigen we go to the magnificent Stokvass Valley where we do a 1-hour hike to our cabin or to your tent (option). Depending on the snow condition we choose for snowshoes or hiking boots. The cabin is in a remote area surrounded by dramatic mountains and close to a vast lake. We will prepare a lovely Norwegian dinner here, and if we are lucky, we might see the northern lights. After that, we prepare ourselves for the night.
After breakfast, we will explore the area around the cabin and do some (snowshoe)hiking. We leave the trails and do some cross-country hiking along the shores of the lake or the river bed. There are also some waterfalls to explore. If conditions are right, we can also do some ice fishing or do a hike over the frozen lake. If you are in for a bit tougher activity, we can try to reach a high point on a mountain pass. At the end of the day, we will return to the cabin and cook our dinner. If the weather is nice, we can do that outside on a fire.
We will leave the cabin after breakfast and do a 1-hour drive to the small fishing village of Helnessund. Here is your apartment located and you can choose what kind of activity you like. Options are hiking to some great sandy beaches, exploring the archipelago of Helnessund with kajaks, make a fjord trip with our expedition vessel, or do some sea fishing. If you like to stay overnight in a tent close to the sea with great views over the fjord, we can arrange that. If the weather is nice, we can do some outdoor cooking and maybe prepare our latest catch. In the evening there is time to relax or do a hike to a hill to observe the northern lights if they appear.
After breakfast, you take the morning catamaran ferry back to Bodo in one hour. A fantastic voyage over the wide Vestfjord with the Lofoten Islands at the horizon. You will travel in between numerous islands and get a good view over the fjords. You will arrive in Bodo at 10:00 AM, and that's early enough to catch any flight from 11:15 AM or later.
If you like to extend your trip with 1 or 2 days, we can arrange that. For some of the activities mentioned we need a calm sea.
A greaT MICRO ADVENTURE: ICE FISHING IN ARCTIC NORWAY
If the ice conditions are good and safe, you can enjoy a back-to-basics lifestyle with catching your meal. Ice fishing is relaxing and sometimes hard work to drill a new hole. We hike top scenic lakes that are surrounded by steep mountains. We will try to catch for instance Arctic trout.
